Our Top Free Camps

So these are our favourite free camps from our travels so far. They were all completely free, and very enjoyable.

1. Merbein Common- Merbein was a great spot. It didn't get on this list because of the facilities (just some bush toilets), instead it got on for the location. You just stepped out of the caravan and it was literally just a hop, a skip and a jump down to the river's edge. We made a rope swing over the river (anybody know if it is still there) which we enjoyed launching ourselves off the bank over the water. We didn't launch ourselves in the water (too shallow, and sooo hard to get out)but we still swing. We were down the road a bit too away from the main campsite so we had some lovely peace and quiet (expect when it was spoiled by those noisy kids in the 1980 Millard caravan).
2. Mendooran- Mendooran was a lovely camping spot, right on the river (you will notice a theme about rivers) which Joel, Chloe and I kayaked up and down. There was a few rope-swings on the river, which we had a go on. We also had a lovely fire, which we always enjoy.
3. Paddy's River- Now, in winter this is a pretty place, but in summer it would have been even better. The lovely river (the theme again) out the b
ack was crystal clear, and also nice and chilling. Joel tried to ride across the river, and managed to get himself soaked. We also walked the trail to Paddy's Falls, and it was really quite nice. The roaring fires where another highlight, and well needed too.

4. Gum Bend Lake- Now, the fishing here was fun. As I was walking along the lake, I noticed that when you got too close to the weeds there was a movement of water, and a big carp slid out into the water. Suddenly I had a brainwave, cast a lure just beyond the weeds and see if a carp would take it. Joel also liked my idea, and we set out. It worked too! Another fun thing was to use our net, and swoop it down and try and catch it. Fun Fun!! Plus, free hot showers, water and clean toilets, plus a big dam and a river.
