Homeschooling FAQ

What Year are you in? I am currently doing Year 9. I am not really doing years, it is more focused on my ability. The program is individual and is focused on our different interests. One example is me doing a computer programming course, which I am interested in.

Do you like home schooling better than school? Yes I do. Home schooling, as before mentioned, is individual and allows people to focus more on their own interests than simply doing the same thing for every child in the schoolroom.

Do you miss school? No I don't miss school. I found school boring, stressful and mean. I had lots of problems with friends, and I was quite stressed about it. I never liked the cool group, and I was a sort of loner.

What do you do for home schooling? I have done a detailed post on this: What I do for school.

When do you finish? I generally finish home schooling about midday before lunch. With no interruptions like naughty kids, assemblies, and plenty of other things, I can whiz through and get it all done by around 11-12 o'clock. After I have finished, I have plenty of time to pursue my own interests, like reading, crocheting, sewing, swimming, bike riding, tree climbing and lots of other things. When I was in school from 9-3, I didn't have time for all this as I was busy with doing homework and then was too tired to enjoy myself and pursue my own interests.

What about socialising? While at school, I believe I lost a vital skill, the art of making friends. I am naturally shy, but home schooling kids are generally friendly and welcoming, and I didn't find it hard to make new friends. At school, I didn't have to step out of my comfort zone and actually talk and try to make friends. If you find yourselves in a good town with plenty of home schoolers, there is generally a home schooling group that does activities together. Another thing, you don't need to separate ages like school. I can find myself just as comfortable talking with an adult, or playing with little kids then only limiting myself to people my age. Some people I know are in their 20's, and I don't mind talking to them as they have experienced and life lessons to impart to us.

Is your Mum a teacher?
Yes, both Mum and Dad are fully qualified as teachers. Yet I know plenty of home schoolers that aren't teachers. True, we might have a more structured program, but I prefer that. Also, I simply have a set program that I follow, not really needing mum's help except when can't figure it out on my own. Chloe needs a more hands on approach, but a teacher is not required to help her.

Feel free to ask any more questions. I will answer them to the best of my ability.
